Obesity during pregnancy

When families plan on having babies, they generally do preparations to make a good beginning of life for their offspring. Parents also start thinking about the financial resources available, living arrangements, and the type of future their children will have.

So as pregnancy occurs, they personally ensure that they are willing to follow their maternal appointments (ANC) or wellness tests to ensure sure the infant is in perfect shape. Although such precautions are essential, health experts note that the internal atmosphere in which the baby grows and evolves should always be taken into account by parents.

The prescribed healthy weight prior to pregnancy is one of the main health benchmarks for women. Study findings from recent research reported in the Child Psychology and Psychiatry Journal demonstrate that overweight pregnant women may impede their offspring 's optimal development of the brain. Women with high body mass index(BMI) are susceptible to changes in certain areas of the brain: the prefrontal cortex and anterior insula that are linked to decision making and behaviour. When these parts are inhibited in their functionality they can cause conditions such as autism, eating disorders(overeating), and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) in children.

 Obesity in a mother can play an active role in the development of a foetus, and may describe some of the cognitive and metabolic health concerns of children born to women with higher BMIs.

The Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) figures reveal that 33 percent (between 15 and 49 years) of Kenya women are overweight or obese. And these incidents tend to be increasing because of unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles.

The probability of pregnancy miscarriage is increased with the aftermath of the brain and spinal region and also on brain development. Women should check their BMI before pregnancy in order to avoid complications thereof. A licensed dietician will help in guiding and recommending the best nutritional diet to keep in good shape.
